Neurofeedback is a non-invasive, drug-free approach to mental health that works by training the brain to regulate itself more effectively. Using real-time feedback about brainwave activity, clients learn — often without conscious effort — to shift their brain toward healthier patterns of functioning.

How Neurofeedback Works

During a neurofeedback session, sensors are placed on the scalp to measure electrical activity in the brain (EEG). This information is fed back to the client in real time — typically through a video or audio signal that responds to the brain's activity. When the brain produces desired patterns, the signal rewards it. Over time, the brain learns to produce those patterns more consistently.

The process is gradual and cumulative — most clients notice changes after 10–20 sessions, with full effects typically emerging over 30–40 sessions.

What Neurofeedback Addresses

  • ADHD — improving focus, impulse control, and executive function
  • Anxiety — reducing chronic hyperarousal and worry
  • Trauma and PTSD — calming a dysregulated nervous system
  • Depression — addressing the brainwave patterns associated with low mood
  • Sleep disorders — training the brain toward healthier sleep patterns
  • Peak performance — optimizing cognitive function and emotional regulation

Neurofeedback and Racial Stress

Chronic racial stress produces measurable changes in nervous system regulation — patterns of hyperarousal, hypervigilance, and dysregulation that neurofeedback can directly address. For BIPOC clients carrying the neurological burden of ongoing racial stress, neurofeedback offers a powerful complement to talk therapy.
